Refractive Surgery

LASIK is a safe and effective form of laser refractive surgery performed on the cornea to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. LASIK was first approved by the FDA in 1998.

LASIK uses a laser to reshape the cornea, which is the front part of the
eye. Reshaping the cornea changes the way your eye focuses light,
making vision more clear and reduces or eliminates the need to wear
contacts or eyeglasses. The Procedure takes just 15 minutes for both the eyes

 

PRK. Like LASIK, PRK is a laser refractive surgery that reshapes your cornea to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. Unlike in LASIK where the treatment is performed underneath a flap, PRK is performed on the surface of the cornea. The procedure is mostly done where LASIK might not be the safest option like thin corneas.

ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) surgery is a vision correction procedure that is FDA approved to treat nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. This is an artificial lens that is surgically implanted
inside the eye. It is carefully placed between the iris, which is the
colored part of the eye, and the natural lens. Unlike laser refractive
surgery (LASIK and PRK) that treats the cornea on the outside of the
eye, ICL surgery is intraocular surgery and therefore is performed in
the sterile operating room to ensure maximum safety. Because the lens is placed inside the eye, it does not require daily replacement or
cleaning like a regular contact lens.

 

RLE (Refractive lens exchange surgery) involves carefully
removing the natural lens in the eye through a small incision and
replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens implant. This artificial lens implant is able to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia (difficulty focusing up close) which reduces, or possibly eliminates, the need to wear glasses or contacts. An additional benefit of RLE surgery is that removing the natural lens in the eye eliminates the need for cataract surgery later in life.
